Po Leung Kuk - Tackling Life
Our latest accomplishment saw the 2017 tournament continuing Tag Rugby. Our beneficiary charity for the third time was once again Po Leung Kuk – Tackling Life Programme, a very satisfying and worthy cause which we have previously supported for 3 years allowing the programme to grow exponentially. We proudly raised close to HK$623 thousand enabling us to support this amazing programme for a further two years.
The “Tackling Life” programme seeks to introduce Po Leung Kuk students to rugby, and use the sport as a medium to encourage a healthy and positive lifestyle; sessions focus on building confidence and self-esteem alongside developing team work and interpersonal skills.
In addition, at the Children’s Learning Centre the use of native English speaking coaches will also encourage students from the Language Training Programme to build confidence in using English in a non-traditional learning environment.
Launched in 2012 the Tackling Life programme now has almost 5000 children under the age of 12 playing rugby on a weekly basis. Coached by talented HKRU staff and PLK teaching staff, the programme aims to introduce children to rugby and use the sport as a medium to encourage a healthy and positive lifestyle. Sessions focus on building confidence and self-esteem alongside developing teamwork and interpersonal skills allowing the children to use English in a non-traditional learning environment.
It was with great pride that a cheque for HK$700,000 was handed over to Dr. Eleanor Kwok, Chairlady of Po Leung in 2016. As a result of the continued support, the first PLK affiliated primary schools rugby team was formed in March 2017.
Earlier this year, two U12 mixed teams were selected from the 20 PLK primary schools to participate in the 4th Beijing International Touch Tournament on 20 and 21 May. They each played 4 games. One team took 3rd place and the other team 1st place. The kids had a fantastic trip and were beaming with pride. Well done PLK U12’s! This is a tremendous new initiative, very exciting for all the kids, and of course would not have been possible without the support of the Corporate 7’s sponsors and supporters.
